Additional learning support
At our school, we are committed to ensuring every student is ready to learn and able to thrive in all areas of school life. We support students with disability and additional learning needs, as well as those who require extension, so they can fully participate in their learning journey. A formal diagnosis is not required for a child to receive support in a mainstream class, and assistance can begin at any stage of school. Our learning engagement program provides small, targeted support groups with a particular focus on English and mathematics. These groups are led by our learning engagement staff with the support of our School Learning Support Officers. The team meets fortnightly to monitor student progress and develop tailored intervention or extension plans to best support each learner.
Support that fits your child's needs
At Coogee PS, we know that some students need extra support to feel confident and do their best at school. We work closely with families, teachers, and support staff to put the right plans and adjustments in place for each child.
Support may include:
- small group tutoring in literacy or numeracy
- specialist help for students learning English as an additional language or dialect (EAL/D)
- extension programs for high potential and gifted students
- accessible classrooms, assistive technology, or adapted resources
- extra guidance, simpler content, or a different focus during lessons
- adjustments to assessments, such as extra time, breaks, or alternative formats.
We identify when support may be needed by monitoring student progress, reviewing assessment data, and listening to concerns from parents and carers.
Our learning engagement groups are flexible and designed to meet students’ changing needs. Children may move in and out of groups depending on their progress. Groups may focus on reaching key learning goals, providing targeted support over a term or semester, or extending learning in areas such as English, mathematics, or design thinking.
For students who require more tailored support, we develop Individual Learning Plans in collaboration with families, teachers, support staff, and, when needed, outside agencies. These plans set clear goals and strategies to help every child succeed. They are reviewed regularly and changed when needed.
If you think your child may need extra help, contact us.
