Wellbeing
At our school, student wellbeing and learning go hand in hand. We want every student to feel safe, included and ready to learn. Whether your child needs help with their mental, emotional, social or physical wellbeing, we are here to help them thrive at school and in daily life.
Our approach to student wellbeing
At Coogee Public School, student wellbeing is a priority. It is guided by Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL), which sets clear expectations for students as learners and members of our community. Our three simple school rules - SAFE, RESPECTFUL, LEARNERS - form the foundation of our wellbeing programs.
We also offer targeted programs to support children’s emotional and social development. For example, Grow Your Mind teaches resilience, kindness, and emotional wellbeing, helping students build strong relationships, confidence, and a sense of belonging.
Central to our approach are our Learning Powers, which help students become resilient, confident learners. Through these, students learn to:
- Keep trying, even when things are hard (Be Gritty)
- Ask questions and stay curious (Be Curious)
- Work with others and learn from mistakes (Be Collaborative)
- Reflect on their progress and set goals (Be Brave)
- Approach learning in creative ways (Be Creative)
These skills prepare children not only for success at school, but also for lifelong learning and personal growth.
How we support student wellbeing
Supporting each student’s mental, emotional, social and physical wellbeing is part of everyday school life.
We do this through:
- teachers who help students feel welcome and included
- access to school counsellors, school psychologists and specialist staff
- programs that support health, social skills, attendance and positive behaviour
- help for students who are new or changing year levels
- clear expectations for behaviour and respectful relationships
- staff who get to know each child and work closely with families
- developing health care plans for students
- open communication about wellbeing and support.
